Argumentative Essay Outline



  1. Introduction. The death penalty is a common practice among the U.S. states. It’s often reserved for the worst of criminals. Is it actually used on the worst? Is it necessary to use on them? Capital Punishment is how the U.S. executes its criminals.


Thesis: By committing a serious crime or not, people are being sentenced to death all over the U.S. because of the crimes they commit. This form of capital punishment isn’t benefiting anything.

  1. What is The death penalty?
    1. Only people 18+ years can be sentenced to death.
    2. It is only used in five countries.
      1. China, Iran, Yemen, North Korea…….United States.
      2. Meant to serve justice to evil people and punish them for their heinous crimes.
  2. Establishment in the U.S.
    1. This has been used ever since the first settlers came over from England.
      1. Britain has influenced America heavily with its death penalty laws.
      2. There are 17 states that have abolished the death penalty
        1. As New Mexico was abolishing it, two inmates were still sentenced to death due to the repeal not being retroactive.
      3. There are 33 states who still actively use the death penalty.
        1. The U.S. government and U.S. military also use the death penalty.
  3. Death Penalty suspended.
    1. The death penalty was suspended in the U.S. in 1972 aftera series of hearings and descisions stating that it was unconstitutional.  
    2. It was reinstated in 1976 after a series of statutes and hearings.
  4. Conclusion
    1. The death penalty is a very serious issue. Many people have been wrongfully executed and accused and convicted wrongfully.
    2. It’s a major flaw in the U.S. court system.
